It’s the most surprising carnival in London when the orthodox Jewish community discard their traditional black clothing and break into a dazzle of colour and costumes for the festival of Purim.

A beautifully crafted book, ‘Purim in Hackney’ from acclaimed Hackney photographer Neil Martinson,  captures the essence of this joyful holiday this year, providing a rare glimpse into one of London's most distinct and close-knit communities.

Neil said: “Hackney has always been a place of incredible diversity and energy. The orthodox Jewish community has long been an integral part of this borough, and I wanted to share their story, particularly around Purim, which is such an expressive and joyful festival. This book is a celebration of their resilience, joy, and traditions.”

Face painted children and men dance in the streets wearing a bewildering array of costumes with the sound of Hasidic music blaring from open top double decker buses and sound systems. This photobook features striking, surprising and candid images.

With over four decades experience of documenting life in East London, Neil Martinson brings his signature style of authentic storytelling to the forefront, offering an insider’s view of this unique celebration.
